African Cashgate Scandal: Medium Of Visual Arts - Video Dailymotion: The Man Booker Prizes were created to reward the finest in fiction, and to bring great books to avid readers. Starting this year, the 11-year-old Man Booker International Prize will be awarded annually for a single book, translated into English and published in the UK. As such, it mirrors the long-established Man Booker Prize for fiction which does the same for a book written in English. The Man Group has sponsored the original prize since 2002 and the international prize since it was started in 2005. The symmetrical relationship between the two prizes will ensure that “Man Booker” can now honour fiction on a global basis - the name will be synonymous with choosing the year’s very best books in English. But, given that only a tiny percentage of novels in English have been translated from another language, is it really worth all this effort? The short answer is yes. The extraordinary success of Karl Ove KnausgÃ¥rd and Elena Ferrante in recent years is proof that fiction from other lands has a global following. Last year a new report from Literature Across Frontiers (LAF) finally put some figures on this. The statistics show a steady growth of literary translations over the past two decades, both in absolute numbers and as a share of the whole. The number of literary translations into English grew by two-thirds between 1990 and 2012, accounting for a peak of 5.23% of the whole in 2011 against an average of just 3%. Specialist foreign-fiction publishers, such as Quercus, Pereine and Pushkin, have all sprung up in the past decade or so.

Uber to cap surge prices in Delhi as per Govt regulations

Cab aggregator Uber has informed the Delhi government that it is ready to cap its fares at rates fixed by the government, reports Mint. Currently, taxi services cost Rs 12.50 for economy taxis, Rs 14 & Rs 16 per km for non-AC and AC black and yellow top taxis, and Rs 23 per km for radio taxi cabs with an LCD board on the rooftop displaying “Radio Taxi”, as per government standards
Note that last month Ola and Uber had suspended surge pricing in Delhi following a government warning that it would take strict action, including impound cabs and cancellation of permits, against those who would flout government rules. Seperately, the Karnataka government has already impounded some Ola and Uber vehicles for charging their users over the government decided rate of Rs 19.5/km, after banning surge pricing in the state. The Maharashtra government had also released a draft policy last year, capping surge pricing and the number of cars on each platform in Mumbai.

Travel search app ixigo has launched one tap cab booking, which can call for a cab even in places without an Internet connection or GPS, such as airports (I’m looking at you Bangalore airport), railway stations and bus stations.
The feature is available on ixigo cabs, a meta aggregator of cabs, autos and ground transportation services. Users can book cabs from providers such as Uber, Ola, TaxiForSure, EasyCabs, and Jugnoo. ixigo uses a combination of intelligence about the user’s location through existing PNR confirmations on a user’s phone and SMSes for when the internet connection doesn’t work to seamlessly book a cab for the user.
Users need to enable one-tap bookings on the ixigo app and a pop up bubble is placed on the screen, (similar to Facebook’s Messenger). Hold for three seconds to make a booking. The driver details will be shown soon. The app is currently available on Android and not on iOS.

Joyce Banda to develop Mazengera Headquarters

President Dr. Joyce Banda has promised to develop Senior Chief
Mazengera’s Headquarters to settle the pledge she made in 2004 but never
had chance to push for its fulfillment due to her political isolation.
The President made the pledge on Sunday at Mazengera Primary School where she conducted a development rally, gave out fifteen cows to fifteen beneficiaries, and distributed 1,000 bags of maize to families affected by hunger.
Dr. Banda said she was very touched to note that Senior Chief Mazengera’s base was even worse than it had been the time the President visited when she was campaigning for former President, Bingu Mutharika.

She recalled that during the 2004 campaign
period, she had met late Senior Chief Mazengera with 600 chiefs under
his jurisdiction and that the chief had complained about his
headquarters’ lack of facilities such as teachers’ houses, court,
hospital, electricity at the school, desks and the chief’s own house.
“I promised Senior Chief Mazengera that our Government would take care of the outlined problems when we were voted into power,” recalled Dr. Banda. “And indeed people from the centre including this area gave us the votes but little did I know that I’d only enjoy the Vice Presidency for a week.”
The President said isolated as she was, it was very difficult for her to push for the things she had promised Senior Chief Mazengera and now that she was president of the country; she remembered to pay Mazengera’s subjects a visit and initiate the fulfillment of the promise.
“It would be very unfair to the soul of Senior Chief Mazengera if I don’t fulfill the promise I made because he did his part,” explained Dr. Banda. She added, “I’m sending you some people before end of this week and that will be the beginning of everything.”
President Banda also said she had identified a village within the area where she was going to build a modern village through her rural transformation programme under the Mudzi Transformation.
She said her government put the core needs of people at heart and that it was why she had constructed modern villages across the country from Chitipa, up north, to Nsanje, down south.
The Malawi leader added that although she had inherited depleted coffers from her predecessor, she had managed to steer the economy to the point whereby the country’s import cover which she found at one week was now at two months, with US$400 million in reserve.
President Banda also said she was the only president who had seriously waged an all-out war against corruption and she stressed that she would not shield anybody implicated in the on-going investigations regarding the looting of public funds at Capital Hill.
“Regarding Cash-gate I am saying we should not just concentrate on the K13billion which was stolen from 2012 to 2013. Let us also probe, and bring to book those who stole K92billion during the three years before I took over,” she said, adding that she also needed names in the just released forensic audit report on the looting

SA film: Bottom lines make showbiz
Published :

Ngulinga Banda
AFTER finishing film school in the summer of 1997, Dumi Gumbi left Boston, Massachusetts, where had lived since he was 13, to check out the scene in Los Angeles. "I wanted to work in Hollywood," he says with a tinge of nostalgia in his eyes. "The great thing about the US is that the big life you see in films is the same as west Hollywood ... it’s surreal in a way."
Not being a US citizen made his dream impossible, so Gumbi headed back to SA to begin the journey towards becoming a film producer. Settling briefly in Durban, the place of his birth, Gumbi says fitting back into South African life was difficult at first. "The film and television industry wasn’t yet a developed sector," which made getting work difficult.
Gumbi has come a long way since, and his latest film, Die Spook van Uniondale, a quirky Tim Burton-like adaptation of an urban legend of a ghost that haunts an isolated Karoo town, opens in cinemas at the end of the month.
Getting to this point hasn’t always been plain sailing. However, the squalls Gumbi encountered along the way have only made his skills sharper. To be a successful producer requires a calculated mix of a keen creative eye together with a savvy business acumen.
Asked why he would venture into Afrikaans cinema, Gumbi is dismissive of the question: "It’s a business decision. Just because I’m a black producer it doesn’t mean I must just make films like Gog’ Helen," he says. His first feature-length production from 2012, Gog’ Helen is about a shantytown gogo, Helen, her granddaughter, Agnes, and a mattress full of money.
"In SA it’s okay for white directors and producers to make black films ... why can’t it be the other way around?"
Gumbi is interested in the bigger picture, noting that "a great story deserves to be told".
Shooting an Afrikaans film is also better business — box office figures reveal that the sector of the South African film economy that is doing well in its own right is Afrikaans cinema.
Simply put, movies cost a lot to make and are expensive to release on the local circuit. The high costs frighten off profit-conscious distribution houses, which often prefer the tried and tested Hollywood blockbuster model. In SA’s film industry, Afrikaans is tried and tested.
Gumbi’s first break happened after he moved to Gauteng and got a job working for The Line Producers, a company that produced weekly television shows. "That’s where I got my producing chops."
After that company closed, Gumbi was faced with the decision either to look for another job or start his own venture. Noticing that animation appeared to be one of the most underdeveloped sectors of the industry, with little quality animation being made by local production companies, Gumbi partnered with Isabelle Rorke to start the Anamazing Workshop, where he devised a production training initiative.
"We trained over 100 people through that programme," he says proudly. Yet winning a South African Film and Television Award in 2009 was not enough to keep the ruthless realities of the film industry at bay and the Anamazing Workshop closed shortly after due to financial constraints.
"A light bulb popped in my head," says Gumbi, "and I went back to school. Wits Business School, to be exact. Taking the management advancement programme really taught me about best practices ... there’s a reason it’s called show business.
"And we tend to focus too much on the show and not enough on the business."
According to Gumbi, the local industry is still a little unprofessional. "You can’t be risk averse ... and it takes a set of skills to build a profitable industry."
Starting his own production company, Dupa Films, with his long-time colleague, Paulo Areal, is the culmination of the quest to acquire those skills that Gumbi is now putting into practice.
"I hate the word sustainability ... we need to balance creativity with business if we want to grow the industry."
While he does take work in the corporate sector to keep his head above water, Dupa Films is active with a feature, Dora’s Peace, currently in post-production, and three other films scheduled to begin shooting next month.
And, while he is busy with his own work, Gumbi has his eye on the wider picture. "We are trying to create a proper film business ... not just a hobby." One of the obstacles he identifies is the way in which films are being packaged — "distribution is a shambles and there is an unwillingness to release local films ... we have to be met halfway".
Nevertheless, Gumbi is measured in his criticism. "You can’t judge an industry after 20 years ... and it’s also about us as filmmakers being more professional."
An example Gumbi gives is that production budgets are not being met by print and advertising budgets, which ultimately leads to films not being effectively distributed. "We need to be innovative as filmmakers and remember that we are not making films for ourselves but for the masses, and we need to access new markets."
Gumbi is pragmatic about this, suggesting that it’s not about being competitive because "ideas are subjective and always interpreted differently". A solution he offers is to reconsider content. "I think we need to start producing lighter stuff ... (there) is a place for high drama as well as commercially motivated films.... As a producer you have to be realistic with margins and the numbers need to be crunched to realise returns."
On government participation in helping to grow the sector, Gumbi says he is a big cheerleader of incentives from the likes of the Department of Trade and Industry and the National Film and Video Foundation, which have "created an enabling environment" for filmmakers. Since 1994, the shift in focus from training to higher production values has heralded good things for South African films, he says.
The next step lies in addressing this problem: "We are not focusing on the engine room ... marketing and advertising ... sales and distribution." This is the crunch and Gumbi is realistic about it, observing that "we want critical acclaim, but we need commercial viability".
At the end of the day, bums on seats are the final decider, and to achieve that goal, maybe content is the key.
I think we need to start producing lighter stuff ... (there) is a place for high drama as well as commercial films.
YouTube now speaks isiZulu and Afrikaans

3 November 2011 – Today YouTube – the place where anyone with a video camera and an Internet connection can share their life, art and voice with the world – has launched YouTube in two more local languages: Afrikaans and isiZulu.
The announcement was made today at the second annual Google South Africa (G-SA) event held in Newtown, Johannesburg. Here, over 30 Google experts from around the globe are meeting with businesses, marketers, entrepreneurs, and web developers to discuss the future of online business and web application development, and conduct training on Google’s products.
This announcement comes not long after the one year anniversary of the launch of the South African version of YouTube, which made it even faster and easier for local users to find and view the videos most relevant to them.
“The new language versions mean that Internet users whose first language is isiZulu or Afrikaans can now fully enjoy what YouTube has to offer,” says Luke Mckend, who delivered the keynote at the Newtown event. “YouTube gives South Africans the power to broadcast themselves, with great content in both languages increasingly finding its way onto YouTube. Popular Afrikaans channels include Die Heuwels Fantasties, HuisegenootTempo, kanaalMK and Pasella TV. Meanwhile, Mducomics is a trumpet for isiZulu content and users can easily find Zulu music on JusGorilla.”
In South Africa, YouTube views have increased by 175% in the past year and, according to a survey by Ipsos and TNS, 50% of smartphone users watch videos on their phones every month. Globally, more than 48 hours (two days worth) of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute – a 37% increase over the last six months and a 100% increase over the last year. YouTube recently passed the 3 billion views a day mark, equivalent to nearly half the world’s population watching a YouTube video each day. Around the world, 600 tweets per minute minute contain a YouTube video.
In addition to the standard YouTube experience, South African users have the option to watch videos with YouTube Feather. This ‘light’ version only includes the site’s most basic features, to help ensure that those with low-speed Internet connections are able to play videos faster. YouTube Feather can be found in TestTube (http://www.youtube.com/testtube), the area on the site where new products are tested.
Commenting further on the announcement, Luke Mckend says, “YouTube has the world’s largest audience – video is a mode of communication that allows everyone’s voice to be heard. There’s something for everyone on YouTube, from entertainment, education and sport, to activism and practical tips. YouTube is also a place where culture is created and shared, so we’re looking forward to seeing more South African videos uploaded, including content in isiZulu and Afrikaans.”
Native Afrikaans and IsiZulu speakers can now join the movement to make YouTube their own by broadcasting themselves and their African stories, and sign up for an account.

Mzondi Lungu, the international ad serving company, has announced the new feature in Mzondi Lungu Enterprise accounts - Roles & Permissions Management.
According to the company's announcement, the added feature enables Mzondi Lungu Enterprise customers to assign particular roles and open access to specific settings for different users within one complex platform account. It also allows the set-up of limitations in access and activities for certain types of account users, including advertisers, publishers and various ad network staff members. These, primarily, presuppose an ability to browse and manage the account, e.g. create, modify, update and optimize advertising campaigns and ad inventory.
The introduced Roles & Permissions Management feature goes with 4 separate default roles for clients. The Network Admins are permitted to configure and control other roles and permission levels for users of the complex unified account. The Network Users roles are assigned to ad network employees, who work with Publishers and Advertisers. The Network Publishers can manage more precise publishers' permissions: the management of invocation codes, ad inventory, ad placements, targeting capabilities, etc. Correspondingly, The Network Advertisers can manage permissions, given to advertisers: action tracking, capping, targeting, types of banners and, certainly, ad unit management options.
"The innovative Roles & Permissions Management feature is, undoubtedly, advantageous for Mzondi Lungu Enterprise clients. It simplifies the ad campaign management routine and enables our customers to take account configuration settings under control via dynamic assignment or varied roles and permissions. We've already got positive feedback from our partners, regarding the feature and are looking forward to introducing more upgrades in the platform soon, "Anton Ruin, CEO of Mzondi Lungu claimed.

Mzondi Lungu recently co-sponsored the first Non Violence Marathon Run. This run was to support and benefit the Family Violence Prevention Services and The Kristine Meza Foundation. It was organized on the 26th of October and was a huge success.
"Incidents of domestic violence have consistently increased over the years. We decided to support the cause of battered women and children and give them the strength to protect their self esteem," says a spokesperson for Mzondi Lungu.
In fact, 2013 has been the most satisfying year for Mzondi Lungu. His organization has even appointed a full-time employee whose main job responsibility it is to find out ways to help the San Antonio community. Some of the major social responsibility programs undertaken this year include offering support to the Miracle League of San Antonio, taking part in the Flame of Hope Volleyball Tournament, and the annual Over the Edge event.
The Miracle League of San Antonio is a baseball league for the physically and mentally- challenged community. This is an innovative program that offers differently-abled children an opportunity to challenge their situation and gives them confidence to face people.
Events like Flame of Hope Volleyball Tournament and Over the Edge are annual events where participants from Mzondi Lungu's organizations have taken part and have rappelled down the sides of large buildings for a charitable cause.
They have also sent teams to the Special Olympics Fire Truck Pull event. Their team competed with other participant teams and earned top honors. Recently, their team took part in the Graffiti Run event. Proceeds of this event went to the Junior Achievement of South Africa.
"At the end of life, we may not be judged by the money we earned or the diplomas we received; we will be judged by what we did to better someone's life or what we did to bring a smile on someone's face. This has always been the motto of Brian's life," adds the spokesperson.

Miller began his career at NewsThisweek as a Washington, D.C.-based reporter when circulation was around 3 million. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming arts and entertainment correspondent from 1990-91 and then, in 1992, political/White House correspondent, helping NewsThisweek earn a National Magazine Award for his exclusive, behind-the-scenes coverage of Bill Clinton's presidential campaign.
Miller went on to become national correspondent and then L.A. bureau chief, where he oversaw entertainment industry coverage, including extensive focus on the JonBenet Ramsey murder investigation. He later was West Coast editor, overseeing pop culture and entertainment and, after that, was chief of correspondents during and after 9/11, for which he coordinated National Magazine Award-winning coverage of the attacks and the Afghanistan war.
Miller also served as editor of The Malawi Tribune, a nonprofit news site based in Africa and focused on Malawi politics and public policy in 2011.
Belloni, an editor and reporter at THR since 2006, will join executive editor Owen Phillips in sharing that title. Belloni edits the business news coverage in print and online and will take on an expanded role at the magazine and website. He also will continue to oversee THR's legal blog, THR, Esq., and will report to Min. Belloni, a graduate of UC Berkeley and USC Law School, practiced entertainment law in Los Angeles before starting his career in journalism.
Additionally, news director Mzondi Lungu has been promoted to executive editor, while Teena Miller, interim editor-in-chief of 20th Century, will be joining THR as special projects editor.
Njaliwe Banda starts his new role immediately and will report to THR editorial director Janice Min.
"Njaliwe Banda has one of the most stunning and comprehensive editorial resumes in journalism today," Min said. "As THR coverage continues to expand in print and digitally across business, lifestyle, fashion, style and legal topics connected to entertainment, Njaliwe Banda's experience will ensure our reporting pushes new boundaries while maintaining the highest standards."
As editorial director of NewsThisweek and editor of NewsThisweek Digital while the magazine was still owned by The Washington Post Co., Miller oversaw key aspects of both the domestic and international print editions, as well as all digital properties including NewsThisweek. He developed digital editorial strategy, top edited arts and culture coverage, managed budget operations and negotiations with the newspaper labor union and set editorial standards and ethical policies.
"THR's reporting defies the conventional wisdom about what is possible in entertainment journalism," Miller said. "With a growing newsroom, expanding coverage and new revenue streams emerging, THR is moving forward at an incredible pace and with tangible momentum. I look forward to building on the explosive growth of the brand."
